Story County Medical Center  (515) 382-2111, 630-6^th Street, Nevada.  Free Care Program provides necessary medical care to Story County residents who meet income eligibility guidelines and either do not have adequate insurance coverage available to them or who are Medicare insured, but are unable to pay deductibles and co-payments.  Covers services at the Medical Center and its clinics located in Maxwell, Nevada, and Zearing.  Program does not cover out-patient prescription medications, nor any of the physician specialty services provided within the Medical Center or at other locations. 

Story County Community Dental Clinic: (515) 956-4595, 126 South Kellogg, Suite 1.   All ages are eligible and must also be Story County residents.  Must have NO private dental insurance.  Must bring proof of income and residency to first appointment.  This is NOT a “free” clinic.  There is a co-pay each visit.  Beyond the co-pay, clients may have to pay the sliding fee scale rate for services performed, based on their household income.  Both emergency and appointment times are available.  Call for more information.

Although we understand that most individuals may want to be examined and if necessary treated by their primary care provider, the Health Department does provide free and confidential STD clinics to the public. Clinic locations, phone numbers, and hours of operation, as well as what you can expect during a visit to one of our clinics, follows.

NOTE: Minors do NOT need parental consent for examination and treatment. For additional information, call 311. These clinics are located in all five boroughs, with some having Saturday hours.

What You Can Expect During a Visit to an STD Clinic

Upon arriving at the Clinic, you will be asked to fill out a form with information about yourself and your reasons for coming to the clinic. Your medical records are confidential, meaning no one has access to them except authorized Health Department personnel. On this form, a number will be written. To ensure your confidentiality, you will be called by that number throughout your clinic visit. During registration, you will be called and seen by clinicians. Our medical staff is made up of doctors who have been practicing the specialty of diagnosing and treating STDs for some time. Please be accurate and detailed when providing information, so that we can provide you with the best medical and counseling services, when discussing your medical history with the clinician. Please Note: General Intake for all clinic visits will start at 8:30am.  Clinic MD visits will be taken until maximum capacity is reached for that day.

During the medical exam, a clinician will take specimens, some of which will be tested at our on-site lab. A microbiologist will perform the lab tests and share the results with your doctor. If indicated by those results, you will receive medication before you depart the clinic. Some specimens though may be sent to an outside lab for testing. The clinic staff will let you know how and when to get those results so you can come in for additional treatment and follow-up if required.

HIV Counseling and Rapid HIV Testing is also offered at the clinic. You have the option to test confidentially or anonymously. The results of confidential testing are given to the patient in writing which would be necessary for follow-up medical care. Anonymous testing results are not linked to a person's name but a patient does have the option of converting his or her results to a confidential status if desired. To further understand the benefits of each, speak with one of our staff or call the DOHMH Call Center (1-800-825-5448).

Viral hepatitis services are offered at several clinics*. Hepatitis C screening is available for patients at risk of infection. There is no vaccine for hepatitis C. Vaccine for Hepatitis B is available to ALL patients who have not been vaccinated or infected in the past. Vaccine for hepatitis A is available to patients at high risk of infection. Hepatitis A vaccine will NOT be provided for travel purposes.

Akwaaba Free Medical Clinic at the International Central Gospel Church

Description: The Akwaaba Free Medical Clinic at The International Central Gospel Church in Worcester offers free medical care to all. The clinic is a project of the Akwaaba Health Initiative, and is staffed by volunteer doctors, nurses, and medical students from the UMass Medical School. One of the main goals of the clinic is to improve access to health care for Worcester's African immigrants and residents of the Vernon Hill neighborhood.

Services:

• Services include checkups • prescription drugs • HIV testing • and diabetes, cholesterol, and blood pressure screenings. The clinic also helps patients enroll in free or low-cost health insurance plans and gives referrals for other services.

• Hours are Thursday evenings, from 6 PM to 8 PM. This is a walk-in clinic. You do not need an appointment.

• Undocumented noncitizens are welcome. You do not have to give any identification and no one will ask about your immigration status.

Guild of Our Lady of Providence Free Medical Program at St. Bernard's

Description: This free health clinic, at St. Bernard's Church in Worcester, offers medical care to children and adults who are uninsured or underinsured.

Services:

• Services include immunizations, adult and pediatric medical care, pharmacy assistance, social services, and referrals.

• Hours are Thursday evenings, from 6 PM to 8 PM. You do not need an appointment.

Health Awareness Services of Central Mass.

Description: Health Awareness Services is a non-profit health care organization with family planning clinics and HIV counseling and testing sites in Worcester and other central Massachusetts locations. HIV/AIDS services, and all services for youth age 17 or younger are free. Charges for other services are based on a sliding fee scale.

Family planning clinic services:

• Services include pap smears and breast exams • screening for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, anemia, testicular cancer • blood tests for marriage license applicants • birth control • pregnancy tests • emergency contraception • testing and treatment for urinary tract infections and other common gynecological problems • screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections • referrals.

• The clinic serves adults and youth of reproductive age. Teens do not need parental consent.

• Services are free for youth age 17 or younger.

• Health Awareness Services accepts MassHealth, the Children's Medical Security Plan, and several other insurance plans. In some cases, you may need a referral from your primary care doctor.

• For adults (18 and older) without insurance, charges are based on a sliding fee scale. The amount you pay is based on your gross income and family size. No one is turned away because of inability to pay.

• The Worcester Family Planning Clinic hours are Wednesdays from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM. You should call for an appointment.

• For satellite clinic hours in Marborough, Milford, and Southbridge, call Health Awareness Services at 1-800-637-5466.

HIV testing/counseling services:

• Services include confidential HIV testing • HIV case management (Framingham, Milford, and Marlborough) • and partner counseling and referral services.

• HIV/AIDS services are free.

• Worcester HIV clinic hours are Monday, Thursday, and Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM; and Wednesday, 1:00 to 8:00 PM. This is a walk-in clinic. You do not need an appointment for these services, but you should call before you come to make sure that the clinic is open.

• For HIV clinic hours at satellite locations (Framingham, Milford, Southbridge), call Health Awareness Services at 1-800-637-5466.

Plumley Village Health Services

Description: Plumley Village Health Services is a satellite health clinic located in the Plumley Village public housing development. It provides medical services and health education to residents of Plumley Village and the surrounding neighborhood. Plumley Village Health Services is a partner of UMass Memorial Health Care.

Services:

• The clinic is staffed by a family physician, physician's assistant, nurse, family planning counselor, and outreach workers.

• The clinic provides primary and preventive care for children and adults.

• The clinic also offers free immunizations, substance abuse counseling and treatment, HIV testing, a Healthy Teen program, Healthy Homes program, and prenatal care.

Ronald McDonald Care Mobile

Description: The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile is a mobile health care unit that makes scheduled stops at various locations in Worcester. It offers free health care to children and young adults who do not have health care because of financial problems, language barriers, or transportation issues. The Care Mobile is staffed by family doctors, nurse practitioners, dental hygienists, lab technicians, and outreach workers, and is equipped with medical and dental exam rooms and a lab.

Services:

• Medical services include physicals, treatment of illnesses, immunizations, well-child care, lab tests, blood pressure tests, health education, vision referrals, hearing tests, and mental health counseling.

• Dental services include dental exams, dental cleaning, dental x-rays, fluoride applications, sealants, and referrals.

• The Care Mobile helps eligible families enroll in MassHealth, Health Safety Net (Free Care), and other low-cost or free health care programs.

• The Care Mobile makes scheduled stops at community schools and various other locations in Worcester on weekdays between 9 AM and 6 PM. Call for a schedule. If possible, make an appointment ahead of time. However, walk-ins are always welcome.

St. Anne's Free Medical Program

Description: This program provides medical services free of charge for children and adults with no insurance or very little insurance. It serves Shrewsbury and surrounding towns, including Worcester.

Services:

• This clinic offers medical care for adults and children, including physicals, diagnostic testing, obstetrics and gynecology, immunizations, medical equipment, pharmacy assistance, and referrals for urgent care.

• Clinic hours are Tuesdays from 6 PM to 8 PM. You do not need an appointment.

Worcester Evening Free Medical Service Program (WEFMSP)

Description: The Worcester Evening Free Medical Service Program (WEFMSP) has two walk-in clinics for adults and children with little or no health insurance. The clinic at Epworth United Methodist Church offers free general medical care. The clinic at Wesley United Methodist Church offers free eye exams and hearing evaluations, and free or low-cost eyeglasses and hearing aids. Services are provided by volunteers from the Worcester area.

Services at Epworth United Methodist Church:

• Services include physicals, lab tests, treatment of illnesses, medications, referrals to specialists, physical therapy, nutritional counseling, social services information, and other referrals

• Hours are Mondays, 6 PM to 8 PM. This is a walk-in clinic. You do not need an appointment. The clinic is closed on major holidays.

Services at Wesley United Methodist Church:

• Services include eye exams; free or low cost eyeglasses; glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy exams; hearing tests; and low cost hearing aids

• Comprehensive eye exams are offered on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month from 6 PM to 8 PM. This is a walk-in clinic, first-come, first-served. You do not need an appointment.

• Ear exams are offered on the 4th Monday of each month. Hours are 6 PM to 8 PM, first-come, first-served.
